NEWSLETTER

March 2009

Beware the Ides of March.  I say beware the winds of change as scouting goes from strength to strength.

You will notice from the article inside showing the census returns figures that there is quite an increase in numbers for the current year.

This is Good News indeed and a great compliment to leaders as without their input, and especially their time and enthusiasm, we would not grow but fizzle away to nothing.  Well Done All.

Roll on 2009 with all there is to look forward to.

70 Years Young

Hi. Have any of you ever been a member of the 231st Sheffield (Shiregreen)?

We are planning a social reunion night on the day we were affiliated-the 3rd May, as it's our 70th Year. The evenings’ entertainment will include a buffet and disco.

If you have ever been involved in the group in anyway and would like to attend or contribute to the event please don't hesitate to get in touch! The more the merrier. If you know of anyone that used to be part of the group please pass this information on to them and ask them to contact me.

Further details will be posted on our website as they are organised.

Indoor Cooking Competition

The Cooking Competition has been restarted with the trophy being named in honour of a former DC Graham Wilks who was a great supporter of the indoor cooking competition.  The original trophy of a ladle was donated and named after Philip Wilkinson, to whom we extend our thanks for allowing us rename, it in honour of Graham.

This was held at Bradway Scout centre on Saturday 31st January. We had a great turnout, 7 teams of 4scouts each. Thank you to leaders and parents who helped in anyway.

The teams were from 69th Mosborough, 146th Old Norton,  181st St.Chads, 203rd Our Lady and St. Thomas, 246th Beauchief Baptists, 265th Greenhill and 297th Bradway.

The standard of cooking was outstanding, with culinary delights from France, Belgium, Italy and Mexico. The understanding of food hygiene and all the trappings of preparing, cooking, serving and eating a meal were on display to the enormous credit of the scouts taking part well done to you all.

The result was extremely close, 4 teams within a very few points, but the winners were 265th Greenhill who were presented with the trophy by Shirley Wilks.

Thank you to the judges: Tim McQueen, Frank Richardson, Ian Cox and Rose Francis.  They will have a lot to live up to next time when they defend the trophy next year as the other groups will be determined to take it from them!!!

Well done to everyone concerned.

Rose

ROSYS

ROSYS is the County News Letter that is produced in the county office at Hesley and distributed electronically.  It would appear that the circulation list is well out of date.  I am suggesting that Maureen Carr, using our Sheaf News database, should handle Sheaf District distribution.  If you receive multiple copies please contact the other senders NOT Maureen and inform them of the situation.

Thank you

Peter Stevenson DC    24/02/09

From County Office received 25/02/09

Due to leaders and others coming and going in districts, and of course who better to know who they are than the districts, we are currently looking into having one contact per district who can be relied upon to circulate ROSYS to their members.  I know the County Commissioner will be talking to the DC’s about this shortly.  It will be a lot easier for circulation if this happens.

Snippets

When Sheaf events have happened, can I, where possible, please have reports back of what was done, numbers attending, winners etc. so I can put it in the newsletter?  Leaders do read these reports and sometimes think ‘that sounds good’ we’ll give it a try.

Maureen

Do all your leaders and supporters receive Sheaf News? If they are on email and wish to have the newsletter sent to them please inform me and I will add them to my lists.

If they are not on email please print one off and pass it on.  Also please affix one to your notice board.

Maureen

Of Interest to all Scouts and Explorers

This item has arrived via The Sheffield Wildlife Trust and their activities appear to be very much aligned to what we do within scouting.

Earthwatch is a project run by Sheffield Wildlife Trust to provide exciting and challenging experiences for young people in a woodland environment.

We run our sessions in Moss Valley Woodlands near Norton College in Jordanthorpe.
Activities include shelter building, tool making, trees felling, using knots & lashings, and fire lighting.

The project is aimed at young people aged 13-19, so would be ideal for Explorer Scouts.
The sessions are primarily about having fun, but will be a chance for participants to gain valuable skills such as team working, tool use and working with wood.

Sessions can also be tailored to work towards a Scouts badge.

We adapt our sessions to work with the seasons.
In colder weather we practice fire lighting and more energetic activities to keep participants warm.
We ran successful sessions all through December, and even developed a range of stealth games that work well in the dark, so there is no need to be limited by the time of year.

All session are free.

We would be glad to work with Scout groups from anywhere in Sheffield but sessions must be run in Moss Valley Woods, so will be of particular interest to the local scout group. Transport can be provided if necessary.

For more information please contact me on 0114 2634335, or on this email address. f.Ireland@wildsheffield.com

I work part time so if I am not in the office please leave a message and I'll get back as soon as I can.
