Bat walk

Peter Stevenson reported that approximately 120 people attended the bat walk in Graves Park, although no bats were seen, but all who took part enjoyed the pleasant walk.

Bulbs

On collecting bulbs from the council nursery at Norton I noticed quite a few of Sheaf scout groups had taken up the offer of free bulbs for planting in the community, so well done to those groups.

Glenbrook Cub Camp

Friday 16th October 2009 saw the start of the Sheaf Cubs Weekend. There were about 45 children and various leaders, helpers, fellowship, explorer and unit members. All of who worked extremely hard to make it a very successful weekend.

All on this fantastically organised weekend had fun and frolics. It started with a craft evening of making edible spiders, floatable boats and stand-up car cards. The next day was a wonderful visit to the Chestnut Centre in the Peak District National Park. It is a conservation park for otters, owls and other birds, deer and foxes. This centre is well worth a visit as you are able touch and let the deer lick and nibble your fingers as they are so tame, which we did as we made our way down to see the owls and otters.  It was feeding time whilst we were there and this was extremely interesting watching the otters gobble up dead chicks!!!   The giant otters posed for photos as they were fed on the fish being thrown to them.  Also being fed was a polecat, where the food was hidden in different parts if its cage and it had to hunt and sniff to seek it out.

We were commended by the staff on the behaviour and enthusiasm of the cubs, so well done to the kids.

Saturday evening was rocket making and, the next day, with the help of John Boltons’ magic machine, the cubs were outside shooting them as high into the air as a compressor could send them.  Great excitement, whooping and whaling ensued. We want one of those machines please, however, I was informed they were hundreds of pounds to source, I don’t think Group Executive will let me have one.

Richard Corcoran did a very entertaining camp- fire; his Frankenstein was particularly good and very funny. We sat with baited breath waiting to see if his wig would catch on fire. Glad to say it didn’t. Richard, you were brilliant, many thanks.

Sunday was a walk, paddle, sail the boats on the river Derwent, wade in the water, oops, fall in and get wellies stuck in the mud expedition.  But the cubs still had enough energy to play a massive post office game on the front field running around after the fellowship team and the unit youths. I’ve never seen the cubs so tired after a weekend away.  Or Peter and Janet Stevenson and Maureen.

The cubs and leaders would like to give a big thank you to all involved in making it such a successful weekend. See you all next year. It’s already booked in our diary.

District Carol Service

Don’t forget the district carol service on Wednesday 9th December.

Mac, the organiser, has a sketch very suitable for cubs to do and requires a cast of an old man, an old woman and some rappers.

It will need to be rehearsed, so if your pack or group is interested, please contact Maureen PRO, for a copy of the script.

Sheaf District Scouts Christmas Band

By popular demand we are getting together a band for the Christmas Carol Service. No experience necessary, we shall try to accommodate most instruments.

Practice meetings will be held on Wednesday evenings between 7.15pm and 8.15pm at Helmton Rd. The first practice meeting will be on Wednesday November 4th. Please let me know, if you can, who is interested. If you know what instrument they play and how good/bad they are, it helps, so I can get some music ready.

You can email me at: thebatleyfamily@btinternet.com or

Telephone 0114 274 7961

Hope you can attract some of your group, it is good fun and we are assured a seat at the Carol Service
